Valorant’s team voice is push-to-talk by default, with V as the key. Most “my mic doesn’t work” problems come down to that, the wrong input device, or another app grabbing the same key.
Start with Riot’s Loopback Test so you can hear yourself, then work down this list. The PS5 has one extra system mute that catches a lot of console players.
Quick Fixes
- Hold V while you talk (team voice is push-to-talk by default).
- Open Settings > Audio > Voice Chat and pick the right Input Device and Output Device.
- Turn on the Loopback Test to hear your own mic.
- Check the scoreboard to see if you or a teammate is muted.
- On PS5, make sure Mute Game Voice Chat is off in the Control Center.
- Restart the Riot Client.
Check Valorant's Voice Chat Settings
- Open Settings > Audio > Voice Chat.
- Set Input Device to your headset mic and Output Device to the headset you’re wearing.
- Turn on the Loopback Test and talk. If you hear yourself, your mic works and the problem is in the game or the key.
- Make sure Team Voice Chat and Party Voice Chat are both turned on.
- Turn the Loopback Test off again before you queue.
Riot’s guide says both voice channels use push-to-talk, so at least one channel has to be on and its key has to work.
Fix Push-to-Talk Key Conflicts
If the Loopback Test works but your team can’t hear you, another program may be using the same push-to-talk key. Discord, a browser call or overlay software can all grab it.
Change the key in one of them so no two apps share it, then close other programs that might be using your mic and restart Valorant.
PC (Windows) Voice Chat Fixes
On PC, Windows has to allow mic access and the right device has to be the default. Valorant usually uses the default input device unless you pick one in-game.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and turn on Microphone access and Let desktop apps access your microphone.
- Open Settings > System > Sound, and under Input choose your headset mic. Talk and watch the volume bar move.
- Under Output, choose the headset you are actually wearing.
- Close other apps that grab the mic, like Discord or a browser call, and test again.
If you play through Steam, you can also test your mic in Steam > Settings > Voice. That only tests the device, but it proves Windows can hear it.
PS5: Turn Off "Mute Game Voice Chat"
Riot’s PS5 guide points to a system setting that silences voice chat in every game. It’s easy to switch on by accident.
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Select the Sound icon.
- Make sure Mute Game Voice Chat is turned off.
- Back in Valorant, open the scoreboard and check nobody is muted, then turn Team Voice Chat and Party Voice Chat off and back on in settings.
PS5 Voice Chat Fixes
On PS5, the console decides which mic Valorant hears. If the wrong device is picked, your squad hears nothing.
- Press the mic mute button on the DualSense controller. When it glows orange, your mic is muted.
- Go to Settings > Sound > Microphone and pick your headset under Input Device.
- On the same screen, use Adjust Microphone Level to check the bar moves when you talk.
- If the account is a child account, a parent can check Settings > Family and Parental Controls to see whether communicating with other players is restricted.
A PS5 party (Game Base) and in-game voice are separate channels. If your friends are in a PS5 party, you won’t hear the game’s squad voice chat, and the other way around, so agree on one.
Xbox Series X|S Voice Chat Fixes
Xbox privacy settings can block voice chat in every game, Valorant included. Check them on the console or on the account you sign in with.
- Press the Xbox button, then go to Profile & system > Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety.
- Open Xbox privacy > View details & customize > Communication & multiplayer.
- Set You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice & text to allow it if you play with friends on other platforms.
- Make sure You can join cross-network play is set to Allow.
Child accounts are managed by a parent in the Xbox Family Settings app. If these options are greyed out, the parent needs to change them there.
Also check that the controller headset isn’t muted (most Xbox headsets have a mute button or a flip-to-mute mic).
Error Codes 49, 50 and 53
Riot lists codes 49, 50 and 53 as chat start-up failures. The fix for all three is the same: fully restart the Riot Client, not just the game.
If it keeps happening, check Riot Support for a service banner before changing anything else.
Still Not Working?
Work through Riot's Valorant voice chat troubleshooting article. If the Loopback Test works and keys aren’t the problem, Riot’s last step is opening ports on your router, covered in their port forwarding guide.

FAQ
Why can't my team hear me in Valorant?
Usually you aren’t holding the push-to-talk key (V by default), or another app shares that key. Run the Loopback Test in Settings > Audio > Voice Chat to rule out the mic.
Why did my voice chat stop after I disconnected?
Riot has patched this more than once, most recently improving how voice reconnects after a disconnect. If it still happens, restart the Riot Client between matches.
Does Valorant voice chat work on console?
Yes. On PS5, check Mute Game Voice Chat in the Control Center first, then the in-game voice settings.
