Can’t hear your squad in Apex Legends, or they can’t hear you? The most common cause is one setting: Disable Voice Chat under Accessibility, which some players switch on without noticing.
Start with the quick fixes below, then jump to your platform. The in-game menu paths come from EA’s own help page and match current versions of the game.
Quick Fixes Checklist
- Check your headset isn’t muted (mute button, flip-up mic or the orange light on a DualSense).
- Unplug the headset, plug it back in, and restart Apex Legends.
- In Apex, make sure Disable Voice Chat is Off (steps below).
- In the Audio tab, pick the right Voice Chat Input Device and turn Incoming Voice Chat Volume up.
- Check that you haven’t muted a teammate from the squad screen.
- Check your console’s privacy settings if you play with friends on other platforms.
Fix 1: Turn Voice Chat Back On in Apex
Apex has a switch that turns voice chat off completely. It lives under Accessibility, not Audio, which is why it is easy to miss.
- Open Settings with the cogwheel in the bottom right of the lobby.
- On the Gameplay tab, scroll down to Accessibility.
- Set Disable Voice Chat to Off.
While you are there, check Convert Incoming Voice to Text Chat. If it is set to Active, your squad’s voice shows up as text instead of audio.
Fix 2: Pick the Right Mic and Record Mode
If you can hear your team but they can’t hear you, Apex is probably listening to the wrong mic. The Audio tab lets you choose it.
- Open Settings and select the Audio tab.
- Set Voice Chat Input Device to your headset.
- Set Voice Chat Record Mode to Open Mic or Push to Talk.
- Lower the Open Mic Record Threshold if your voice cuts in and out, and raise Incoming Voice Chat Volume if teammates are too quiet.
Push to Talk only exists on PC, and the default key is T. If you chose it, nobody hears you until you hold that key.
Fix 3: Check for Muted Teammates
It’s easy to mute a teammate from the squad screen and forget about it. A muted player stays muted for the rest of the match.
Open the squad view during a match and look for a speaker or mute icon next to each name. Unmute anyone you can’t hear.
PS5 Voice Chat Fixes
On PS5, the console decides which mic Apex hears. If the wrong device is picked, your squad hears nothing.
- Press the mic mute button on the DualSense controller. When it glows orange, your mic is muted.
- Go to Settings > Sound > Microphone and pick your headset under Input Device.
- On the same screen, use Adjust Microphone Level to check the bar moves when you talk.
- If the account is a child account, a parent can check Settings > Family and Parental Controls to see whether communicating with other players is restricted.
A PS5 party (Game Base) and in-game voice are separate channels. If your friends are in a PS5 party, you won’t hear the game’s squad voice chat, and the other way around, so agree on one.
Xbox Series X|S Voice Chat Fixes
Xbox privacy settings can block voice chat in every game, Apex included. Check them on the console or on the account you sign in with.
- Press the Xbox button, then go to Profile & system > Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety.
- Open Xbox privacy > View details & customize > Communication & multiplayer.
- Set You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice & text to allow it if you play with friends on other platforms.
- Make sure You can join cross-network play is set to Allow.
Child accounts are managed by a parent in the Xbox Family Settings app. If these options are greyed out, the parent needs to change them there.
Also check that the controller headset isn’t muted (most Xbox headsets have a mute button or a flip-to-mute mic).
PC (Windows) Voice Chat Fixes
On PC, Windows has to allow mic access and the right device has to be the default. Apex usually uses the default input device unless you pick one in-game.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and turn on Microphone access and Let desktop apps access your microphone.
- Open Settings > System > Sound, and under Input choose your headset mic. Talk and watch the volume bar move.
- Under Output, choose the headset you are actually wearing.
- Close other apps that grab the mic, like Discord or a browser call, and test again.
If you play through Steam, you can also test your mic in Steam > Settings > Voice. That only tests the device, but it proves Windows can hear it.
PC players on Steam or the EA app can also repair the game: in Steam, right-click Apex Legends, then Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. In the EA app, open the game’s menu (the three dots) and choose Repair.
Nintendo Switch 2
Apex Legends has its own in-game voice chat on Switch 2, so you need a headset that works with the console. EA notes that Apex doesn’t work with the Nintendo Switch Online app for voice chat.
Plug the headset into the console or controller, then follow the in-game steps in Fix 1 and Fix 2. For Bluetooth headsets, check Nintendo’s own support page for pairing.
Still Not Working?
If every setting looks right, the problem may be on EA’s side, especially right after a new season or patch. Check EA's Apex Legends voice chat article and use its Contact us button for EA Help. If the problem started for everyone at once, wait for a fix rather than reinstalling.
